Hansen, is a FAO consultant at the Emergency Management Centre for Animal Health (EMC-AH) responsible as the Sub-regional Assessment Lead for South Asia and is leading the implementation of the sub-regional assessment of animal health emergency management systems for South Asia using the FAO’s Progressive Pathway for Emergency Preparedness (PPEP) tool, in alignment with the Animal Health Emergencies of International Concern (AHEIC) strategic action plan.
Hansen has specialized in community development, participatory approaches and international humanitarian standards, such as Sphere Minimum Standards, and Livestock Emergency Guidelines and Standards (LEGS). He was instrumental in engaging with veterinary universities and disaster management authorities to establish and strengthen the Veterinary Emergency Response Units (VERUs) in India. He regularly trains humanitarian professionals, and government officials, including paramilitary forces such as National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) battalions on the management of animals in emergencies through simulation exercises and capacity building initiatives.

Session Brief
Mr. Hansen will explore the current disaster management policy and its implementation status, why it’s important to protect animals during disaster, how disaster management departments work at state level and district level and the role of National and State Disaster Management authorities. Pre, during and post disaster preparedness, the role animal NGOs play during a disaster and how an animal NGO can work with disaster management authorities in their area.
